LESS IS LESS
Daniel Vera’s Folded Landscapes
Text by Inés Alonso Jarabo

Since the beginning of his career, Daniel Vera has explored landscape as the central element of his painting, experimenting with its possibilities and limitations beyond the canvas. Moving from large-scale murals and installations towards minimalism and geometry, this exhibition marks a turning point in his research and brings together the different strands of his previous work. In Paisajes plegados (Folded Landscapes), the artist breaks away from traditional formats to present us with a vision of nature that twists, unfolds and expands through objects that exist somewhere between painting and sculpture, figuration and abstraction. In doing so, he offers viewers a new perspective on what surrounds us—or what once did.

Following his exhibition Locus Amoenus: Paisajes de Aragón, Daniel Vera felt the need to experiment with new formats and supports: “to preserve the content while transforming its formal structure,” as he puts it. This desire to alter traditional mechanisms of spatial representation transforms his work: instead of depicting geometries, he begins to construct them from the landscape itself. This evolution culminates in these hybrid works that combine painting and sculpture. As he notes in his artist statement, we inhabit a space in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the virtual and the real, appearance and truth. Through Paisajes plegados, Daniel Vera invites us to reflect upon this relationship between opposites. In his works, as in life, we should not speak of front and back, for they are two slopes of the same mountain.
